Usually splint: X-rays cannot see ligaments, therefore if a finger x-ray showed a ligament injury, it was most likely due to an avulsion injury (the ligament is not torn but actually tears a small piece of bone away from its point of attachment). This is usually treated by immobilization, sometimes by surgery. It is best to consult a hand surgeon for a definitive treatment plan.

Ligament finger: may be managed conservatively for low grade or partial sprains or complete term or sprain in some fingers, however complete tears in certain joints such as the thumb MP joint or a finer MP joint with persistent instability may need surgery. Acute complete thumb mo joint ligament teats often are red with surgery. Xrays dot show ligments but can shoe a bone avuslion, a fracture or joint malalignment
