Herpes Zoster?: I have seen many patients present with unilateral eruptions they "thought" were "spider bites" or "poison ivy". I would see your eye doc as this sounds like shingles..Herpes zoster ; rx would be indicated.

my 13 month old has a swollen eye from a bug bite. i gave him zyrtec about ten hours ago. the swelling hasnt gone down, can i give him benedrly too?

Yes: I would recommend seeing your PCP. The area around the eye may be prone to infection. If the insect bite is not infected, the local reaction may be controlled by a cool compress, and local application of Caladryl  lotion.  You may also use Aoral antihistamine such as Benadryl. The dose may be discussed with the pharmacy and your PCP.

Itchy eyelids, face: Adults and older children can take allergy pills such as Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, or Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Benadryl is sedating. Allergy pills help with allergies in the eyes, nose, skin, etc...  Eye allergies sometimes need eye drops such as Zaditor (ketotifen) for extra help with symptoms. Many people find relief with hydrocortisone cream twice a day for a few days, on itchy facial skin.

Reasonable: For the acute allergy based reaction of a bug bite on eyelids, a pulse corticosteroid treatment is very reasonable to reduce eyelid swelling, itchiness, and discomfort. A brief treatment is not likely to impose any unfavorable health consequences.

See your doc: There are a lot of possibilities for this.  It could be an infected "insect" bite, an ingrown hair, abscess, etc.  Get it looked at asap.

See your doctor: It is best to have it looked at by your doctor to make sure it's not infected and needs drainage. You may also need antibiotics if infected. If you pop it, you risk infecting the area too info already infected.

Is a spider bite?: It may not have been a spider bite.    There have been many cases of skin infections caused by Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) .   The lesion is typically described as a spider bite.   What happens is this organism penetrates the skin via hair follicle and makes its way into the body.  It can evade the immune system, but it can also attack with vigor.  Get a blood test!

Red swollen eye: Swelling in the corner of the eye can be due: allergy (apply cold ice packs if itchy especially); virus (is usually very itchy ; is very contagious; bacteria (need antibiotic drops); excessive sun exposure (called a pinguecula/pterygium) foreign body. See your eyemd if basic cold compresses do not help.

Possible: Hay fever causes an allergic reaction, which could be asymmetric.  If the eye stays swollen after using cool compresses, over the  counter antihistamines or over the counter ketotifen (allergy eye drop), then see your eye md.
