Only one strain: The reaction of kids to CPX varies from a few spots to hundreds, based on their own individual factors. The next kid/adult would react based on their own system. A cited 95% of adults in the US are immune, even if they have no memory of CPX. I would use acyclovir in an adult, but only if they developed a case.Incubation is 10-21 days starting the day before your kid broke out.

Yes: Acyclovir cream is not very effective to begin with, and if you're already taking oral acyclovir, it's completely unnecessary.

Not much benefit: The best time to begin it and make a difference is in the first 72 hours. By 7 days the rash should be crusting over and the illness reaching completion.
Homeopathic rhus toxicodendron is awesome for chickenpox to stop itching and speed crufting over and can be useful even now at 7 days.

Is diagnosis correct: At age 27 this infection is usually serious. If diagnosis is correct you should have started 1 week ago at 800 mg 5x a day for a week. Valacyclovir 1000mg 3x a day is more effective. Yes, it will make you less contageous.

if you were in my office we could have a very open and frank discussion.  Chicken pox can be very irritating anywhere it is found.  But, on the penis is especially painful or irritating. 

I do have one concern and that is if this is herpes and not chicken pox. Herpes is a virus that is part of the chicken pox family.  I am glad to hear that you are on acyclovir. This is the right medicine.
