None: It simply makes oxygen from the air. Hence, no effect on the respiratory system at low concentration of oxygen.

Some thoughts...: There are many different types of respiratory issues (major vs. minor is sort of vague). For example, a person with proper blood circulation to one-and-a-half good lungs but is missing his other half-lung should be able to oxygenate his blood just fine. When talking about oxygen saturation percentages, realize you are talking about a machine's displayed number, which may or may not be accurate.

Hemoglobin: this is the molecule in blood that caries most of the oxygen in your blood.

Sure: Your oxygen level of 95 is normal.  However that's not to say you won't get septic and develop septic shock and die in 48 hours.  Or get a PE.  There are many things that can happen to someone aside from having low oxygen.

Oxygen: oxygen is used when the blood oxygen level is low. It will not necessarily help shortness of breath particularly when the oxygen levels are normal. Oxygen is also used for carbon monoxide poisoning and a few other special situations.

Unusual: Some patients with chronic respiratory failure don't have their respiratory drive due to co2, but low o2 instead. Raising the o2 level theoretically can cause respiratory drive to fail. This is controversial however and there are other causes that can create this situation.

SeekEvaluationToday!: The oxygen saturation of 91% is lower than we like to see generally speaking. Given his history of asthma in addition to his current respiratory infection he really needs to be evaluated either in the pediatrician's office today (or the ED if unable to get appointment).  It may be that you just need to increase the frequency of his asthma meds, but only after a thorough evaluation.

Yes: thats a low sat at rest so yes go to the emergency room for an eval
