i have sciatica lower back and leg pain periodically.  i regularly perform the key hole stretch, and strengthen my core and back with regular planks, jump rope and yoga stretches.  i periodically have therapeutic massage as well to relieve the pain.

Yes and yes!: Yoga can be great form of exercise.  You will develop good flexibility (which will prevent injuries), lower your stress level, and also help with back and other joint pain.  It doesn't hurt to also incorporate some aerobic activity like jogging, walking, elliptical or swimming.  Have fun!

Plenty: Massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, trigger point injections by a doctor.  Be mindful of posture, stress and other causes to keep them from coming back.

Great: Yoga is excellent both mentally and physically.  No laws against any food as long as you count it into the totality of your daily intake.

Aerobic Exercise: Yoga is a great way to gain strength, flexibility, focus and many other great benefits.That siad, if you want your focus to be weight loss, you need to burn calories. Aerobic exercise is the way to go: walking, running, bicking, etc. The key is to achieve a pulse about 60% of your maximum (220 - age). Shoot for about 30 to 45minutes a day but always start slow if your not used to exercise.

Endorphin release: Exercise is good for the mind and the body.  It helps condition the heart, the muscles, improves blood flow, improves oxygenation, etc.  For the mind, it helps due to the natural release of endorphins that make you feel good, increase energy.  What type depends on what you like to do and the consistency of doing it.  Combination of things usually work for most b/c it prevents boredom.

i am pressed for time daily and i can't seem to be able to pull of a 30 minutes pilates/yoga/cardio routine all at once. can i split my exercise sessions throughout the day?

: Exercise should be done at a sitting for at least 20 minutes to gain Cardiovascular benefit. But if you absolutely cant then you can split it. Some exercise is better than none.
