BP discrepancies: Unfortunately, wrist cuffs can do what you report - giving various readings over a short period of time. One thing is how you take your blood pressure using them. They should be brought up to the heart level when used. Also, you need to make sure they work properly. Compare its reading with another blood pressure cuff reading to make sure it's not out of whack.

i'd rather use an auto wrist bp monitor for my bp readings vs. a cuff. 1 dr. says wrist one is inaccurate, the other says it is good enough. so?

Probably ok: The wrist vessels are smaller, and you may get more artifact, or more variation in readings.  Have you cuff calibrated with the cuff at your docs office.  If it is within a few points, it is ok for you.

in terms of bp measurement accuracy/reliability, how do wrist bp cuffs compare to the traditional arm cuff @ the dr's office?

As accurate or bette: There is something called white coat hypertension wherein a patient's B/P goes up when in the doc's office because of anxiety. The home measuring devices are accurate and when set up will record a number of readings which can be downloaded to your computer and then printed out and brought to your doc to discuss how you're doing.

what is best bp cuff to have for home use? arm or wrist? digital or regular? thin arms, 92 and 115 lb. thanks.

Digital, arm cuff: Arm cuff is usually more accurate than wrist cuff. Digital is easier to use because one does not have to listen to anything nor watch the dial drop down. Instead, one just pushes the button and waits for an answer. At 115 pounds, an adult cuff is used unless the arm is super thin. If super thin, one can try a child cuff, but it will give a higher reading (and is hard to find at any stores).

my question is ... wrist bp monitors tend to give higher or lower readings? i follow all directions when using it, just need to know if it tend to be higher or if it tend to be lower. it's the only monitor i can use at home , arm cuff won't fit me?

: Properly done these monitors produce readings that parallel (are similar to) those of big machines used in a clinic.

46 y/o female, obese, 126/90 bp in the morning , wrist cuff (arm cuff too little for me) good or bad bp? second reading 116/79 (5 mins later) already being monitored by my dr?

: Second reading reflects a normal blood pressure, while in the first the diastolic or second pressure would be considered as elevated. Losing weight will help regardless and should be part of treatment in case blood pressure proves to be elevated.

: Baum has cuffs 4 largest of arms`Bariatric Cuff. Ask Dr. to get one.  Wrist device is sensitive to being at heart level when it takes the pressure. Seated, this is put in right place by placing hand with cuff  so the tips of the fingers touch the top of your shoulder.  Sit straight. feet on floor. Try both wrists, use highest one.  Take 3 times each  average the them. This is BP at that time.

i am still very confused with wrist bp monitor. is the one i have available , arm cuff won't fit. do i put my arm like resting on a table? or do i have to rest my elbow and raise my hand to heart level? readings are very different, i tried both ways?

: The usual routine is to place the wrist monitor at the specified location near the wrist fold, and fold the arm placing the monitor close to your heart. It does not matter if you lay down or sit to do this. If you are consistent with technique &amp; have good batteries, you should have relatively similar readings if taken 5 minutes apart. It is reasonable to take a couple readings &amp; record the average

can you hurt yourself by using to small of a blood pressure cuff? i used mine and my wrist was hiring bad by time i was done.

Injury unlikely: I have seen bruising on the upper arm due to blood pressure cuff getting too tight.  This is usually only a problem with automatic cuffs.  Pain in the wrist could result from a cuff becoming too tight resulting in pressure on a nerve that runs down to the wrist.  This should resolve shortly without causing damage.  Ensure that your blood pressure cuff is proper size to ensure accurate results.

can a rotator cuff injury cause tingling in my arm and wrist?

Could be from neck: I see many patients with rotator cuff tears that also have numbness, tingling, and even weakness below the shoulder into the arm, forearm, and wrist/hand. The neurological symptoms below the shoulder notoriously arise from an ongoing neck problem such as a pinched nerve within the cervical spine.
