I : I am so sorry you have had to go through gallbladder pain during a pregnancy.

There are two sides to this issue.  Sometimes gallbladder patients eat less because they are having chronic pain from the gallbladder.  If that is the case, your appetite may be increased after your surgery.  Sometimes however, if patients are sick with gallbladder symptoms and don't feel well, they don't exercise as much, so you may feel like doing more after your gallbladder is out.

Weight loss is hard when you are having pregnancies and been sick.  I'm sure you are trying to eat healthy, and try to walk a little farther every day for more exercise, but don't be too hard on yourself about losing weight right away after what you have gone through.

Benefits v. Risks: Most people do very, very well after having their gallbladder removed.  Like any operation, there are risks associated with the surgery, yet these are rare.  App. 20% may develop diarrhea after surgery, especially with fatty foods; however, this usually resolves in time.  More importantly, the pain from gallbladder attacks that prompted the need for surgery will never return.

Pain relief: is probably the biggest pro, and is what prompts most people to get their GB out in the first place. Depending on what is wrong with your gallbladder, other pros would be being able to tolerate more foods, less bloating/gas pain, improved bowel function, removal of polyps. Gallbladder disease: Difficult to answer stated this way. Before dr. Evarts graham developed 1st diagnostic test for gallbladder dz, oral cholecystogram mid 1930's, gallbladder dz was on top 10 list for cause of death in U.S.A. Gallbladder dz remains on this list for several countries where gallbladder surgery is limited, but not in U.S.A. The gallbladder is not essential organ. Okay to have it removed when diseased.

Gallbladder: Cholecystectomy is typically very well tolerated without complications. Rare complications can include bile duct injury or liver injury. May have some diarrhea after the procedure.

Generally 5-8 pounds with multiple repeats is well tolerated
The goal is to avoid pain or hernia in incisions.

Exercise & Diet: Dieting appropriately and supplementing with a regimented exercise program is the best way to lose weight.  Carbohydrates will cause you to gain weight, so a diet that helps to at least start to curtail the amount of carbohydrates you take in, will be a good start.  Good luck.

Depends on his Heath: The risk of gallbladder surgery through laparoscopic cholecystectomy is very low but ultimately depends upon your Dad's overall health and other medical conditions. His doctor and the anesthesiologist should be able to review those risks with you. Typically the risks are quite low and recovery is a few days.
