Dry socket: It develops at any stage when the clot becomes dislodged and leaves the nerve endings and the bone unprotected. It is painful and must be attended to immediately.

i removed my right lower wisdom tooth and developed dry socket. the dentist covered the tooth with a foul tasting gel. i feel much better now and the dentist is removing the gel on my tooth tomorrow. can i smoke or have alcohol??

Don't risk it.: You should not smoke or have any alcohol. Both of these cause immune suppression and can interfere with the healing process. I suggest that you stay away from both for at least 2 weeks until the whole area is completely healed.

Wisdom tooth: A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost after tooth extraction leaving the bone and nerve exposed.  This can be due to infection,nicotine,sucking through a straw or certain hormones such as oral contraceptives.  The treatment is packing with medication.  The packing is usually changed as often as daily.  As the tooth heals the packing will fall out.

Dry socket: If you have terrible pain 2 days or more after your surgery that is not relieved with prescription pain meds you probably have a dry socket or possibly muscular pain.  Most likely form what you have said it is a dry socket.  You treat the symptoms not the appearance of the socket.  Placing a medicated dressing in the socket will give relief within a few minutes usually.

See your dentist: Normal pain following removal, dry socket, alveolitis, infection?  Who knows?  We can't diagnose your problem over the internet.  How do you know it is not a dry socket? You need to see\consult with the dentist who removed the tooth.  Feel better.

Yes, but unlikely.: If the clot has been disturbed , a dry socket post-extraction can occur...Especially in smokers. Usually a medicated dressing is changed every other day  or so which would prevent the formation of another dry socket, or exposed bone.

Dry socket: Once a clot has formed, the tissue has started to grow. Dry socket typically forms in the first 72 hrs.  Gentle cleaning of the mouth is best.

Dry socket unlikely: The occurrence of dry sockets after wisdom tooth extraction is one of the more feared complications. The breakdown of the blood clot that naturally forms after the removal of teeth can lead to an increase in pain. It can happen after any tooth removal, but is most common after the removal of lower wisdom teeth, not uppers. Tobacco is the most important thing to avoid, plus good oral cleaning after.

how many days after a wisdom tooth exctraction (all 4) am i at risk to develop dry socket? its been 5 days and i want to lift weights again.

Normally after: the first week the chance of dry socket is minimal. Swelling is usually at the peak between days 3 and 5. Start out with weights that do not require excessive bending over.
