can a frenectomy alter a person's smile? our dentist has recommended that our son have a frenectomy performed on his upper lip. i'm worried that this might permanently change the way his smile looks. am i worried about nothing?

Most : Most likely this procedure will not alter your smile. In very rear situations, when the upper lip is short and the frenum is clipped only and not excised properly, the remnant of the frenum can roll out during smiling. This problem can be easily corrected with a minor surgical procedure.

i got my upper lip and lower lip frenectomy done two days back by laser and im afraid when im smiling too wide the inside of my upper lip is sagging.

Accepted Answer

Swelling: Give it a week to 10 days for swelling to go down.  Maxillary labial frenum does not hold your upper lip up, so having a frenectomy will not change lip posture.

i had frenectomy operation for frenulum labialis superior, but i am very worried, will my lip shape or smile change because of this operation? will my upper lip hang down? or will there be any changes in my appearance?

Will not go away: by itself.  There are variations in the degree of lip tie, but usually a significant lip tie will result in a gap in the teeth.  A frenulectomy is a fairly simple procedure and can be done with laser or cutting without general anesthesia.  Most infants return to normal feedings right away after the procedure and do not appear to be in significant pain.

Perhaps: If frenulum is short, a frenectomy may help.  If cause is neurologic or muscular, it will not.  A second opinion by an Oral Surgeon or a Periodontist may be in order.

Your : Your lip shape will be unaffected. So your smile will be just as nice as before. So only a defect will be corrected and not traded.

: I am thinking that your bone grafting procedure was done to correct bone loss on your lower anterior teeth, secondary to that frenum pulling and tugging on the gingiva causing recession. Without the procedure those lower teeth would be lost. I have never encountered anyone with such a drastic change following a frenectomy. It would be best to consult with a local oral surgeon re your options.

Frenectomy: A frenectomy is the surgical procedure to remove or relocate the muscular attachment between the lip and the attached gum and bone of the jaw. This is done when there is a diastema or space between teeth and it is this situation is considered a contributing factor for the space. Having said that, the frenectomy will not necessarily close the space nor is it always necessary. Each case is different.
