May be usual, but...: There generally is pain after the local anesthetic wears off; the dentist should explain and warn about that depending how invasive the procedure is, whether he had to clear out infection, or abscess at the root.  He should also give you a script for pain medication appropriate to the procedure, and appropriate to his knowledge of your pain threshold and ability to handle pain. Call, get advice.

A lot of reasons: If you had a bad infection to start with, yes you may still have lingering effects. If the treatment was difficult or f the dentist could not for any reasons clean all the canals all the way.
And in general it is normal to experience some mild pain for a few days or a week depending on your case and your pain tolerance. Pain killers should usually help

HMMM?: It is tough to diagnose this over the computer but a guess, with your recent surgery, would be you may have some infectious process like cellulitis or an abscess forming in the area.  i would get checked out with your symptoms and history of the recent surgery.  God luck.

May be related: You might have an infection, but it needs to be examined. Call your dentist so that it can be determined if you need an antibiotic.

TMJ problem...: Your symptoms point to TMJ problem. You may have the problem prior to the appt. But it has not surfaced yet and during the root canal treatment you must open your mouth wide for a long time. This can trigger the symptoms. You can use hot and cold moist facial towels intermittenly applied at the joint area. Longer (around 30 sec.) with the heat vs. 10 sec. Cold. Contact your dentist.

Jaw pain: It is common to have your jaw open wide for an extended period during a root canal procedure and this can cause some jaw pain.  This is typically strained muscles and OTC ibuprofen, soft diet, and the recommended jaw exercise will help you feel better while the muscles heal. Follow up with your dentist if this does  not feel better.

Seek care now: An abscess is an infection, and MUST be treated immediately or can adversely affect knee surgery.  Ask your Dentist and your Orthopedic Surgeon to talk to each other to arrive at the best path of treatment for you.  Do not put this off.

root canal 2 weeks ago.  now jaw pain and clicking  sound on the same side as root canal.  some soreness/throbbing to tooth and gums.  is this normal?

Many Issues: TMJ "clicking" when opening and/or closing is not directly due to the root canal therapy. Keeping your mouth opened wide during the procedure may be the problem. Pain around the tooth or joint? Soreness around the tooth should be investigated by your treating dentist.
