OK for school: I would go see your physician for an ear, nose, and throat exam. They may be able to give you some medications to help treat the middle ear infection. Typically, ear infections are  not contagious so you should still be able to go to school.

Maybe: My mantra has been "5 in a year or 1 that won't clear" (in 90 days) which is most common in the kids under 2. Older kids have had enough head growth that the poor Eustachian tube function has ended. There are other factors like how sick the kid gets &amp; any allergies to common antibiotics. Grommets can drop infection rate to infrequent &amp; improve hearing immediately.

Motrin: Motrin (after 6 months) is pretty effective for ear pain. You could call the on call doctor or nurse and ask them to call in a prescription for numbing drops (that go in the ear). The drops work quickly to help the pain. Ask your doctor for a numbing drop prescription at your next appointment to have just in case. Remember antibiotics take 24 to 48 hours to start working so waiting till am is ok.

Ear infection: You can try using children's advil (ibuprofen) for the pain. If it is not improving or having a fever or other symptoms, please see your pcp or urgent care.
