Yes: From an open site where tooth was to blood clot colors to healing colors of gingiva to other reasons that you may need to go back to your surgeon to evaluate.

Accepted Answer

Depends: If there is no bleeding and no increase in pain or fever, don't worry.  If you have bleeding that is not extreme or not controlled by pressure, or fever, or increasing pain, call dentist or get seen by your doc or at an UC.  Don't smoke, which increases the risk of a "dry socket."

Extraction: If you don't have any swelling or fever then you probably don't have an infection. Typical extraction sites get food in them and look infected and nasty. Just leave the ext site alone. If you don't have swelling, pain, or fever you are probably fine. Post operative infections following surgery are very rare. Follow up with your doctor if you are concerned.

White is normal: in the mouth a healing cut or sore will be white. A similar scab on the skin would be a dark red to black.  What you describe is normal healing. Do not disturb the extraction site.

Shouldn't see one.: You really shouldn't see a blood clot, at least you hope there is one in the hole where the tooth was.  Other clots from general bleedingmight just be larger globs of blood.  But as far as that hole...You hope the clot stays in the hole.  This is what we think avoids a dry socket and the problems that follow along with them.

5 days post extraction. slight throbbing in my other teeth. clot does not look like it is there dark brown and whitish up there. is this dry socket?

Could be: Day three is the start time for dry socket symptoms in general. See your surgeon as soon as you can. Meantime , keep it clean, don't poke around in there , and take ibuprofen as needed. Good Luck.

Usually: The retained blood clot stimulates the bone to fill in the socket with time. Sometimes the tissue will slough and look like a white patch.  If unusual or disconcerting symptoms, see the surgeon for an exam.

is it normal if the hole for tooth extraction closes over in a couple days?

Accepted Answer

Possibly : After extraction the socket fills with blood that forms a clot. Soon small blood vessels grow into the clot and the surface epithelial cells close over the socket. If there was bone loss with pocketing around the tooth, the tissue may fall together and appear closed over, after only a couple of days.

i'm flying 2 days from now so that will be 5 days in total after my tooth extraction. is this safe for me to take a plane?

Usually Ok but.....: Flying can be problematic in some instances where the maxillary sinus has been exposed during a dental extraction. This is usually not the case for most extractions so flying is usually ok but you should certainly check with your dentist about your individual situation.
