If it is not: a cyst, then it is a solid mass.  There are a variety of possibilities for a solid mass.  MRI may be able to narrow down the possibilities, or make a specific diagnosis.  For example, if the mass demonstrates fat signal characteristics, it is probably a benign lipoma.  Ultrasound cannot provide this kind of soft tissue specificity. MRI also provides superior anatomic delineation.

See a doctor: I am assuming your Nan has not seen a doctor. This is the first thing you should do. An MRI is part of an overall assessment of a patient. With a good history and physical exam, the diagnosis may be made with that expense. If she has seen a doctor and you are not happy, get a 2nd opinion, so you can get answers.

Yes: However, 60%of disc herniations are gone or smaller on follow up mri's 6 months later in people who get better-905 are treated non operatively.

Not likely: No. An MRI is generally not helpful.  A Rx that works but is not often tried is to wear a rib belt to decrease pain by limiting chest expansion  just enough to help the injury  resolve quicker! Sometimes a direct injection at the most painful area with a steroid and a Caine  will also hasten recovery.

Timing is important: The most sensitive test to determine if someone is having a mini stroke is the neurological examination.  A ct scan or MRI scan will confirm or refute the clinical suspicion of a mini stroke.  Changes on MRI scan after a stroke can be seen fairly quickly.  However, the clinical examination is key.

TMJ Symptoms: My recommendation would be to start with an initial consultation with a dentist who has extensive training and experience treating patients with TMD\TMJ symptoms.  At the consultation the dentist should be able to discuss with you the severity of the problem, the prognosis for relief, further diagnostic testing suggested, treatment modalities, etc.  Then make your decision.

Nerve damage: Spinal access may cause nerve damage, espeically in untrained hands. An emg/ncv  (electro-myogram, nerve conduction velocity) study would reveal if there is actual nerve damage. The damage may also depend on the type of needle used to access the spinal fluid. A sharp needle may lead to more damage compared to a "pencil-point" needle.

Yes: Mri will show all of the soft tissue structures of the joint, including the medial and lateral meniscus as well as the acl and PCL and collateral ligaments.

Accepted Answer

Herniated Disc: Yes, an MRI should still show a herniated disc even after anti-inflammatories have been used.  The drugs should help reduce swelling, but a herniated disc is a physical bulge from the disc pushing into the vertebral canal causing pressure on one or more nerve roots. No drugs can change that, even if they make the perceived pain less.

will an mri show a costochondral separation?  i really need a diagnostic test to confirm as insurance company do not believe my gp!

Accepted Answer

Injection : To my understanding, an MRI will not show a costochondral separation. If a local anesthetic is injected into the separation site the pain should immediately disappear for a few hours and help to confirm the diagnosis.  However, if problem is an inflammatory disorder of costochondritis, then corticosteroid in the injectate is useful to resolve (cure) the problem.
