TMJ Symptoms: My recommendation would be to start with an initial consultation with a dentist who has extensive training and experience treating patients with TMD\TMJ symptoms. At the consultation the dentist should be able to discuss with you the severity of the problem, the prognosis for relief, further diagnostic testing suggested, treatment modalities, etc. Then make your decision.

MRI imaging vs CBCT: The MRI views doesn't give the TMJ specialist a detailed picture as necessary of bone structure; and this is exactly what's needed to diagnose TMJ disorder. The CBCT is the gold standard today.

The real answer...: ...is NO. MRI of the TMJ done properly can be a very good tool for diagnosing TMJ disease. However, many centers do not do an adequate job of imaging, and not everyone with clear symptoms show image pathology. The best answer is: if an MRI shows the pathology confirming TMJ disease, then that is a good test. If the MRI is negative, that finding does NOT eliminate TMJ disease, unfortunately.
