what are the best foods to eat after a bad flare up of diverticulitis?

: There does not seem to be much of an effect on food intake on diverticulitis. Want diet that lessens stools a bit or a lot depending.  I would start with overall healthiest diet.  The DASH diet. Should see effect on stools in 2 weeks.

Accepted Answer

: Unless so recommended by treating physician, not the ideal time to take a laxative, such as Movicol. Would recommend avoiding use of any laxative during the diverticulitis flare.

is it ok to take immodium for watery diarrhoea during a flare up of uncomplicated diverticulitis? it's the 4th day of antibiotics and the diarrhoea is making me feel worse. i'm not concerned about constipation as it has never happened to me?

: This question should be addressed to the treating doc as the cause of diarrhea could be the antibiotic or part of the diverticulitis for he/ she knows your problem best. Hope you feel better

5 weeks post op for hip arthroplasty and currently taking aspirin 81mg. also started having a diverticulitis flare. is it bad to be taking the aspirin during a flare? i take it to prevent blood clots but only for another week?

: The aspirin you are taking is a low dose. Are you seeing any blood in your stools? You should call your surgeon and let him/her know about the diverticulitis flare. If you are seeing any blood in your stools, it is possible the aspirin will need to be stopped. If not, you may be able to continue for another week but it is up to your surgeon to make that decision. Good luck!

Depends: If you currently have an active infection, depending on the severity, dietary restrictions will wary.If you do not have an active infection generally staying on a high fiber diet is helpful. Contrarary to popular belief there is little (if any) scientific evidence that avoiding seeds, nut, etc, etc has any effect on causing an infection.

Depends on: Severity, but usually 4-7 days.  If it goes any longer, it could be something else.  Consult with GI specialist for advice.

Accepted Answer

Yes: I tell my patients that nuts are ok.  In the past it was thought that nuts caused problems for people with diverticuli, but I've seen at least one study refute that.

Accepted Answer

I generally: Treat diverticulitis with 14 days of antibiotics, a liquid diet until pain and fever and white blood cell count normalize, then a low fiber diet for a full 6 weeks to let colon heal. If you are having repeated episodes of diverticulitis you should consider elective surgery to remove this portion of your colon and avoid future severe attacks or complications.

Active or resolving?: With active diverticulitis on antibiotics, want to eat smaller and easy to digest foods, avoid heavy meals. As you heal you need to increase fiber in the diet with fruits & vegetables and add fiber supplements like metamucil when alright with your doctor.
