how much time does it take for a black eye to become swollen shut?

Depends on extent of: bruising, since that is what a black eye is (ecchymosis) present, as the more it swells under the skin area, the faster it will swell.That is why cool/iced compresses may be helpful on the lids to reduce the swelling. (It's really the eyelid and not the eye that is black for clarification.) Keeping the head elevated helps too. Don't lie flat. Body needs time to resorb swollen tissue's fluids back.

Black eye: Trauma to the eye take several (up to 6) months to completely heal, especially if the injury is significant.  There's not much to do to treat this during that healing time.

Black eye!: Black eyes comes from a broken blood vessel.  The causes are many, from trauma, thin blood (aspirin, ibuprofen, coumadin, (warfarin) ...) to other systemic causes such as liver dysfunction and lymphomas.  At age 27, it is very unusual and you should see an internist with a good systemic work-up.

How long?: How long since your injury?   Bruising around the eyes may last up to a few weeks.  Change of coloration is normal as the blood clears.

Bruise: Not sure about the age of your child. Glad that you caught her before she hit her head on the floor. Place an ice-pack over the affected area on the face. For children above the age 6 months you can give a dose of children's Motrin (ibuprofen) / Ibuprofen = this is an anti-inflammatory medicine and will be helpful for the enlarging bruise (also known as contusion). 
Call your pediatrician, follow-up asap.

Witch Hazel: Witch hazel is a plant extract which was used medicinally by American Indians. It has astringent  &amp; antioxidant qualities &amp; has been used to reduce swelling. Many commercial witch hazel products also contain alcohol. I would not recommend putting witch hazel near the delicate tissues surrounding the eye. There would also be a risk that the witch hazel could find it's way into your eye - bad.

Takes few wks: Will take a month or so to clear all blood to disappear . Once you checked by your doctor for eye injuries and nasal fractures you don't have to worry and avoid another similar episode

Can take 7-10 days: The length of time for swelling depends on the nature and severity of the trauma. Significant force can result in swelling that takes 10 days or longer to resolve. If the swelling and discomfort remains, a physician should examine the areas to look for possible nasal fractures or orbital fractures...an X-ray would be needed to evaluate these possibilities.
