Depends on extent of: bruising, since that is what a black eye is (ecchymosis) present, as the more it swells under the skin area, the faster it will swell.That is why cool/iced compresses may be helpful on the lids to reduce the swelling. (It's really the eyelid and not the eye that is black for clarification.) Keeping the head elevated helps too. Don't lie flat. Body needs time to resorb swollen tissue's fluids back.
