Vitamin D: If you are breast feeding, it is good to continue your pre-natal vitamins and to give your baby supplements of Vitamin A,,C and D that are not supplied by your breast milk.  I do not know what is available in Germany, but in the US there is a product called Tri-Vi-Sol that are drops that are available without an Rx and recommended for breast fed babies.  See if there is something similar there.

Yes : You still need to give vitamin D for newborn .after baby is borne they have separate stores ,so they need vit D regardless of mom store

Yes: Breastmilk is complete, as long as the mother has adequate nutritional stores.  Vitamin d deficiency is very common, due to lack of sun exposure. If mom has adequate vitamin d levels from either sunshine or supplements, breastmilk should be complete.  One study suggests that moms need to take at least 2000 iu of vitamin d daily to allow adequate levels in their breastmilk.

: Rickets occurs when there is a deficiency of vitamin D. Physiologic bowing of legs can be a genetic condition which is not affected by diet or vitamin D. Supplementation with vitamin D may help if the leg bowing is a result of Rickets. Talk to the childs Pediatrician to formulate an appropriate plan which may include imaging, blood tests and supplementation.

Any time with food: Vitamin d is a fat soluble vitamin so will be more fully absorbed when taken with food that has some fat in it. The time of day does not matter. Most adults need about 5000 units a day from april to october to achieve good levels. If you spend time in the sun from 10-3 in the summer months you don't need to supplement then unless you use sunscreen.

Once daily: One dropperful (1.0 ml) of poly- or trivisol provides 400 iu of vitamin d, which is the amount of vitamin d supplement currently recommended for every breast-fed infant.

Thrush: Nystatin is safe to give. I would give the vit d 1 hour after nystatin. Was the baby prescribed vit d? Young infants should not need vit d and you should consult your pediatrician if not prescribed to be sure the dose is safe.

Safe and wise: Babies need vit d just as much as adults- probably even more as it is essential for bone growth ; immune function. The vitamin d council recommends infants get 1000- 2000 iu of d a day in winter months (and year-round if your baby does not get adequate mid-day sun).
