i have a hernia near my bellybutton that's quite large across my abdomen. what test would be needed to really get an image of this hernia? ultrasound?

i have a hiatle hernia and was wondering if spasms in the abdomen or when your get startled and the abdomen tenses up. can those actions make the hernia worst?

Accepted Answer

: Activity which raises the abdominal cavity pressure significantly such as straining with weight lifting or vigorous cough can worsen the hiatal hernia but I do not think a simple abdominal muscle contraction will have that bad effect.

i'm 43 yrs old have had two hernia surgeries in the past  and have another one  on my left side  of my abdomen  can i get pregnant?

Yes : Whether or not you can get pregnant has nothing to do with the hernias. It is ok to get pregnant with previous hernia repairs. Unclear where the left sided hernia is. If it is in the groin, I would consider repair before getting pregnant. It is probably best to ask your hernia surgeon and have a check up to get a more complete evaluation. Hope this helps!

Not really: Passing a urinary stone has nothing to do with the abdominal wall. If you are wondering if the pain could cause increased abdominal pressure, which could then lead to a hernia, that too is very unlikely. why do i need to get a ct scan for abdominal hernia?

To plan operation: Depending on what type of hernia, ct scans help the surgeon understand the type, location and size of hernia so he/she can plan appropriately.  The radiation dose should b less than a routine scan if the radiologist knows that a hernia is what the surgeon is looking for.

how easy is  for hernia mesh to break or get missplaced ? do abdominals heal as before surgery  and cover it?

Not very...: Hernia repair mesh of any type is almost impossible to break.  It can certainly pull away from the defect it is used to repair, and this results in the real but low rate of recurrence.  If the native musculature is closed over the repair mesh, it covers it. But, if the graft is used to fill a defect, the muscle won't grow over the graft.  Good luck.

can an existing abdominal/umbilical small hernia get bigger from being bloated to having gas build up in the abdominal?

: Intra abdominal pressure from bloating is not high enough to change size of hernia, Exertion and heavy exercise can. If you do that then either have it fixed or wear an abdominal support

i was recently diagnosed with an umbilical hernia . my son is now 9. i get pelvic shocks and intercourse can get painful causing pain in my abdomen

Umbilical Hernia: Very, very, very rare for it to cause any trouble by itself, or need surgery for other than cosmetic reasons. Ask your dr to look into the painful intercourse for you.

See a Surgeon ASAP: The most serious complication associated with an inguinal hernia is bowel incarceration, where a portion of the intestine gets"stuck" within the hernia; if not treated promptly, the blood supply to the intestine can get cut off, requiring emergency bowel resection. If your abdominal distention is due to your hernia, you would notice that the hernia is tender and nonreducible. This is an emergency.

once in a while i get moderate to severe pain on the right side of my abdomen area, but ice or cold in general seem to help a lot. could still be something serious like appendicitis, hernia or ulcer?

See ans: Abdominal discomfort can have many causes. Also depends where in the abdomen are you concerned. Right sides abdominal discomfort can have many causes from constipation to pancreatitis and yes even appendicitis depending on the area. You see not to have any other symptoms so I would consult your doctor for a complete evaluation and then you can stop worrying
