To plan operation: Depending on what type of hernia, ct scans help the surgeon understand the type, location and size of hernia so he/she can plan appropriately. The radiation dose should b less than a routine scan if the radiologist knows that a hernia is what the surgeon is looking for.

Depends: Not all patients with hernias need a ct scan. I do not know your specific situation. It depends on where the hernia may be located, whether the hernia is related to previous surgery or a recurrent hernia. If the surgeon needs to see more details for surgery planning, the ct scan would then be helpful.

See your Doctor: There are several kind of hernias. The most common is inguinal hernia, 2nd most common is umblical hernia, there is also femoral hernia and ventral hernia
most of the time it is diagnosed by examination clinically and there is no need for cat scan.If the diagnosis is doubtful than the doctor may order cat scan, but it is very very rare
so consult your doctor.
