Great difference: The precancerous conditions which are believed to lead to cancer cannot spread beyond the superficial layer of the cervix.  None of these precancerous conditions leads to cancer 100% of the time, but the worse they are, and the older the patient is, the more likely it is that cancer will develop.  The point of pap smears is to detect the precancerous conditions so they can be removed.

Several ways: It is important to realize that not all precancerous conditions of the cervix require specific treatment.  The immune system of young people can clear the lesion and it can be monitors to assure this happening.  If treatment is necessary, there are several methods of removal, including laser, leep conization, and cryotherapy.

: Most frequently "precancerous" cells (CIN) start in the endocervical canal and spread from that pint outward. However cancerous cells can occur anywhere on the outside of the cervix. CIN III (severe dysplasia) can be treated with freezing, LEEP, or laser procedures as needed.

my mother is 58. premenopausal since age 48 history of ovarian cyst. had some precancerous cells on cervix that was removed. uterine lining went from 9mm to 12.5mm. had biopsy today. chances of cancer?

: Endometrial thickness of one centimeter or greater requires a biopsy to detect possible abnormal cells.  Most at age "58" are not cancerous, but preliminary changes which could lead to malignancy should be treated accordingly. Consult with a GYN physician for guidance.

i have a uterine polyp that comes and goes for years. my mother just got diagnosed with precancerous cells in her uterus and cervix. does that mean i'm at a high risk of having precancer or cancer and should remove it?

: Intrauterine polyps are rarely malignant.  "Pre-cancerous cells" may occur after menopause from estrogen stimulation of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), and or cervical dysplasia from HPV for example.  See your GYN physician for a thorough discussion of options.

It stretches and dilates and flattens at time of birth, but it is exposed to everything inserted into the vagina. The cervix surface can deal with infections and viruses, but most cervix cancer is caused by human pailoma virus. Gardisil can prevent.

: Rarely is vaginal itching caused by cancer. The most likely issue may be vulvar irritation from a vaginal infection.  if the itching persists without using the wipes or colored toilet paper then contact your GYN MD for assessment.
