my 9yr/o is having hemiepiphysiodesis guided growth surgery for knock knee how long is recovery and on average how long does a child miss school ?

Accepted Answer

Varies: It varies somewhat based upon surgical technique, surgeons preference, and how comfortable you are with his school environment.  In general, the surgery could be thought of as having as small fracture.  There will be some initial, fairly mild discomfort, but will also need to be protected about 8 weeks.  In my hands, students can return to safe school environment 7-14 days postop.  Ask your md.

Yes: Adult genu valgus( 'knock- knees') especially associated w/ arthritis( more common in older adults) tends to progress more rapidly then genu varus( 'bowlegs')deformity and in older adults can lead to the knee(s) feeling 'unsteady'or 'wobbly'.Knee replacement is often advised for pain relief and 'straightening' the knee.Progression of deformity is due to biomechanics and 'looser' ligaments . GL!

i have a brother who is 15 years old. he has mild knock knees, and he wants to know how to correct them without the use of surgery. what can he do?

Accepted Answer

Not much: If your brother still has some growth left, it is possible as he grows it will correct.  Braces are cumbersome and don't have much of an affect.  Surgery is the only real fix for it, but would traditionally not be done for a mild case.  There is really nothing non- operative that is effective.

Cannot: May be able to unload joints using unloader braces.  This will not permanantly correct the problem.  Severe knock knees can lead to early arthritis.  Surgical correction generally includes gradual correction with an external fixator.  Acute correction can lead to nerve problems.  In older adults with degenerative disease, knee arthroplasty is performed.

can i fix knock knees without surgery at age 17?

Accepted Answer

No: You are done growing at that age so no nonsurgical treatments will change your bone and me alignment. The bigger question is are you having problems with it? There is a variation of normal among people in unless you're having problems I would not worry about it.    If you are having difficulty you should seek an orthopedic surgeon and a major surgery would be required to realign your legs.  This is usually not necessary.

Yes: The technical term for knock knees is genuine valgum.  Correction of the deformity will straighten the leg and make the vertical distance of your leg, therefore making you taller.  The main exception to this is if your surgeon does a closing wedge osteotimy, then bone is removed from the leg and then height gain would be negligible.

Complicated decision: That's really tough. Most kids outgrow it. You've reached adulthood, so joint modeling is complete. Most orthopedic surgeons will tell you they'd rather try conservative (ie nonsurgical) options first, like night braces, because surgery is a big decision. That said, the procedure is minimally invasive, typically very successful &amp; may decrease your risk for early-onset arthritis. Talk to your doc.

Rarely necessary: Knock-knees is also called genu valgus. Although this can be a contributing factor in some knee and other lower extremity conditions, it rarely requires surgery unless severe. You are also skeletally mature at age 17 as a female, and thus, it's unlikely that these "knock knees" will increase in the next couple of decades. The most important thing you can do is stay fit ; stay at a healthy weight.

Biomechanics : Your problem is one of alignment or lack of proper alignment. These are considered “overuse  injuries” .   I would visit a podiatrist or a
 Physical therapists knowledgeable in biomechanics. Shoes, shoe inserts and custom orthotics are used in this situation.  You are young and still developing. Not uncommon to see.

Knocked knees: I am too, or atleast I have significant valgus position of my 
lower legs.  We all can not be sprinters.  One thing your are twelve and because of growth this can be assentuated. You legs are likely to straighten out as you grow, but for many of us it is our nature to have legs shaped like this.  If you are having troubles walking though you  will likely need to see an orhtopedist for your options
