Three drugs: Venlafaxine (effexor); duloxetine (cymbalta); and desvenlafaxine (pristiq).  All can be used for depression & anxiety.  Cymbalta has indications for pain, and some efficacy has also been reported for effexor.

i have severe depression for last 8 mos. snri drugs are not working, what conditions can be causing my depression, what should i get tested for?

See your doctor : Depression not responding to an SNRI requires careful evaluation. Lab test to rule out thyroid dysfunction is important. Your doctor may switch to another class of antidepressant. Another option is augmentation with lithium or antipsychotic such as Abilify (aripiprazole). Treatment resistant depression could be undiagnosed Bipolar depression. Talk to your doctor who knows your history. Avoid use of alcohol.

i am in depression and i have been taking different snri drugs for 8 months but my depression is getting worse, should i try ssri's, what should i do?

I am in depression: It probably won't hurt trying some SSRI's , and might benefit. Unfortunately, diagnosing mental health disorders  is still fairly subjective, so many times it's trial + error before finding right treatment.
Might be more than just depression, such as Bipolar Depression;PTSD or certain borderline disorders.
Should be checked for Thyroid or other underling diseases.

if you on effexorxr 225mg daily for anxiety/panic and still have to take ocassionaly a benzo such as valium 5mg or rivotril 0.5mg say 3-4 times a week at night. does it mean the snri is not working well? should other options be considered?

SNRI: Yes, I do think if you are on effexor at that dose and still needing anti anxiety medication that often you may want to inquire about another medication or getting therapy to deal with anxiety at night in other ways - meditation, relaxation etc.

No.: This may be a side effect of the med, worsening depression or perhaps the diagnosis is incorrect. In any case this does not correlate with any levels of serotonin.

SNRI: Snri = serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.  Effexor, pristiq, meridia, savella (milnacipran), (milnacipran) and Cymbalta are in this class. Tramadol is not.  When serotonin and norepinephrine are not taken back up into the neuron, they are more available in the synaptic cleft between neurons.  Cymbalta & savella (milnacipran) treat fibro pain; the others more for depression. Cymbalta can treat depression; savella (milnacipran) perhaps less so.

Not un-treatable: Now you&#x27;ve learned that medication is not the solution-- that&#x27;s important to know.  But psychotherapy is not a standardized procedure. There are many forms of therapy and therapists, and finding the right &quot;fit&quot; is crucial  see a psychologist (a phd), see him/her regularly (at least weekly), and keep at it until you find help your problems are treatable- -with the right psychologist.

SNRI vs DNRI: Depression has 2 major pathways in the brain, the emotional pathway which causes sadness, crying guilt, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, worry and the 'cognitive' pathway which causes lack of attention, concentration, energy, motivation, pleasure, sex drive.
If you have 'emotional' symptoms choose ssri or snri, if you have 'cognitive symptoms chose dnri, many times these overlap and meds also overlap.
