: Find a life coach to teach you stress reduction exercises and relaxation techniques. Once you have these it should be relatively simple. Try every 3 rd day off then every other then just off. Much of the issue is more habituation (habit) than physical. If you have skills to fall back on you can pursue life unmedicated.

No: You may fall asleep with this medication regimen and not ever wake up. Never take all these medications together. Talk to your doctor who prescribed them to you about the regimen.

i have been taking xanax (alprazolam) 0.5mg at bedtime only for 10 years. could this cause insomnia? how can i stop taking this?

Dependence: It's possible that you have developed tolerence to xanax (alprazolam) 0.5 mg because you have been taking it for so long.
You can reduce the dose to three quarters of the tab for one week, then half a tab for one week and stop and see what happens. Ofcourse, it's always better to consult with the doctor who is prescribing your medication.

Please don't : Overdose yourself. If you are having this type of problem, encourage you to see a sleep specialist.  A polysomnogram may be recommended as well.

Stop: Your sedatives  the tolerance and rebound withdrawal/ insomnia hhave made them less than useless and a cause of the problem. However, your obvious tolerance necessitates a weaning process by an provider experienced in this.

Benzo: 0.5 mg xanax=15 mg of temazepam. Xanax (alprazolam) is short acting with half life of 6-20 hours, but temazepam is medium acting half life of 10-20 hours.

It depends. : A slow taper of xanax (alprazolam) is always best. If it is tapered too quickly,  you could have rebound anxiety. A taper from 0.5mg twice a day could maybe be faster than 7 months but it could be just the right pace for your particular needs.

Yes: You can take Xanax (alprazolam) and receive the same effect, albeit for a shorter period of time. Understand also that Xanax (alprazolam) has a slightly higher dependency profile due it's shorter half-life. Since you are on vacation, this may a good time to see how you do without either of these medications. Perhaps the insomnia won't be as bad or even present away from the usual stressors of your home environment.
