FSGS: This common cause of end stage renal disease and nephrotic syndrome is a severe illness usually followed by assessment of kidney function and electrolytes. If end stage disease is approaching your doctor may entertain procedures to place you on dialysis.

i have fsgs with nephrotic syndrome. is it posible to cure ?, if not what is the best way to manage it?

Some have remission: Primary fsgs is typically treated initially with high dose steroids.  If no response other agents are added such as Cyclosporine or tacrolimus .   Many patients have significant improvement in urine protein levels.   Additionally ace inhibitors and statins are added.   Weight loss,  low sodium diet and a low protein diet are important.   A portion of patients will go into remission.

i have fsgs that is currently active. is surgery for my lower spine too much for my kidney's, right now?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: There are at least 6 different subtypes of fsgs (focal-segmental glomerulosclerosis) that pathologists can distinguish; you have a right to know which kind and the likely outcome. It's likely to be a lifetime problem and if you need the surgery & it's okay with your physicians, this might be the best time to do it. Good luck.

Yes, but...: ...this is your 3rd or 4th question because of worry about HIV after an obviously low risk exposure. i've been diagnosed with fsgs, per kidney biopsy in 2006. my albumin & a/g ratio are low. i'm only on losartin. creatinine 1.3 should i be concerned??

Talk to your doctor: Losartan is one class of meds used in this condition.  There are other meds your nephrologists has probably considered based on your kidney function including prednisone, statins, and aldosterone antagonists.  Talk to your doctor.

Needs attention: Your titers suggest an a broad spectrum of autoimmune disease, i think you need to be evaluated by a rheumatologist and have more testing to be done to identify the cause.

: For primary FSGS (confirmed by biopsy), we treat with immunosuppressive medications which include steroids and calcineurin inhibitors (cyclosporine or tacrolimus) if patient has nephrotic syndrome. If your proteinuria is low (urine protein/creatinine is less than 0.5) I will continue only Telmisartan and try to maintain systolic pressure less than 130. Are you sure you have had primary FSGS?

i have ckd (fsgs) and my current egfr is 34. my last labs showed hematuria for the first time and now my kidneys are beginning to hurt. there were no bacteria, wbc's, or leukocytes. is this the beginning of a kidney infection?

Not necessarily: If there is associated proteinuria, the microscopic hematuria is most likely from progressive glomerular damage rather than infection. I'm not sure that you can be sure that it's your kidneys that are hurting. Your nephrologist, who knows all your findings, can advise you best and can investigate your back or flank discomfort.
