what are some causes for difficulty falling asleep?

Insomnia: Many causes of insomnia, including substances like caffeine and amphetamines plus many medications.  Depression and anxiety can both cause difficulty falling asleep.  Post-traumatic stress disorder can interfere with sleep, and can also cause nightmares that wake you up and then not be able to get back to sleep.  Discomfort in the room, like too much noise, light, or temperature also.

what to do if i have been having difficulty falling asleep lately?

Start with sleep: Hygiene. ( google this). If that doesn't work you can download one of the apps on our site that has to do with binaural beats or relaxation. Many of these are geared towards helping you sleep.  If you're still having difficulties then see your family doctor and make sure you do not have an underlying depression or anxiety. If that is the case they may elect to treat you or refer you on to a psychiatrist. If it is thought that you have a primary sleep disorder your family doctor will likely refer you to a sleep disorder specialist. Best wishes.

Behavior modifying: One place to start is practicing good sleep hygiene. Keep your sleep pattern consistently structured, avoid napping, use bed only for sleep or intimacy, and avoid lying in bed long periods without sleeping. If falling asleep is troublesome because of trouble turning off your thoughts, relaxation and imagery techniques are often helpful. For more help with these make an appointment with a therapist.

Sometimes: Although it seems to defy logic, sometimes it can be hard to fall asleep when you most need to.  This can be due to tension or irritability from sleep deprivation, which then makes it hard to fall asleep.  It can help to avoid bright screens (TVs, tablets, phones) &amp; let your mind unwind.  Maybe try physically relaxing with a warm bath or shower, before resting in a dark, quiet room.

i have difficulty falling asleep at night, though xanax (alprazolam) isn't for that i used to take it to knock me out. xanax (alprazolam) isn't an option anymore. what else??

R meds the answer?: I would want 2know the specific reasons u aren't sleeping well. I'd 1st want u2 have medical checkup. If there don't appear 2B any underlying physical reasons, I'd then want info on your daily routines -what u do, what u eat, etc. Also, I'd what 2understand the stressors in your life, the thoughts run thru your head when u try 2 sleep &amp; when u r awake. Suggest consulting w/sleep medicine expert.

A number of things: Definitely try to avoid caffeine in the afternoon. And if you can avoid napping during the day, that would be ideal as well. Sleep in a quiet, dark environment. The bed should be only for sleep and sex. If you can't sleep after 20 minutes or so, get out of bed and do something else until you are sleepy. And, if you are not sleepy, then don't go to bed, even if it is midnight. Last: see a sleep doc.

Numerous causes: There are numerous causes of difficulty sleeping.  A common cause would be stress.  You should try to practice good "sleep hygiene."  Please search for "sleep hygiene" as  the details are too much for me to go into on this forum.  Simple things like no alcohol before sleeping and no technology in the bedroom are good starts.
