This means: That there is a wide range in size of your rbcs - from small to big.  The most common reason is iron deficiency, but if that is the only thing "off" on your CBC then no additional concern or testing.

What's your MCV?: Hi. Your RDW is slightly elevated. That's not related to your type 2 diabetes or its treatment. What is your MCV (is it above or below normal?)? And lastly, are you anemic? The RDW describes the size distribution of red cells. If your RBC are small (low MCV), iron deficiency is possible, but so are some hemoglobinopathies. If MCV elevated, B12 and/or folate (folic acid) deficiency, alcohol, etc are considered.

: RDW just means there is greater variety in the size of your red blood cells. It is not a disease. It often occurs in people dealing with anemia from loss of blood. The rest of your complete blood count is needed for us to fully interpret the meaning of your RDW. This can be discussed with the person that ordered the bloodwork for you.

Cells are dividing: Rdw is a measure of the cell width or size, and if you have a high RDW it usually means that you have many more immature cells -- and so that means you have cells that are more immature than usual. A rbc RDW means the red cells are slightly larger.

are there any natural ways to lower your rdw-cv to a normal number? and are there ways to naturally prevent diabetes?

: At your age, high RDW-CV is usually due to iron deficiency anemia from more than average menstrual blood loss. To correct that naturally, you should eat foods and vegetables with high iron content such as spinach, broccoli, legumes,  red meat, legumes, etc. (you can google foods with high iron). Only can type 2 DM be prevented by maintaining ideal body weight, low calories diet and exercise.

i got my test results back from my annual dr visit today, but no dr notes. what do these three results mean for my health?

my rdw is 11.5 but should be 11.7-15.4
my a/g ratio is 2.3 but should be 1.2-2.2.
my urine showed calcium oxalate crystals.

See below: Aall tests have a margin of error - meaning that if you repeated the tests , you might get a slightly different results - all your numbers are close to the normal results in the lab you used - If you are concerned discuss this with your doctor(you do not mention amount of calcium oxalate crystals) - crystals can occur with kidney stones, but also dyhydration -so again discuss with your doc-

my brother and i both have the thalassemia trait but we are both very healthy. we both had cbc and cmp tests. we have high rbc and rdw, low mch, low mchv, and low wbc. is the low wbc/neutrophil a problem?

How low: The rbc indices are all expected with thal trait. What is the total WBC and % neuts? Most likely a non issue, but need the actual numbers.

hypothyroidism gained 80 lbs. in 4 yr span take generic synthroid eat healthy, & exercise why can't i lose the weight? hemoglobin hematocrit mch mchc low and rdw high on labs besides anemia what can cause this? before only hemoglobin & mch only low?

: Weight loss in the setting of any metabolic issue, including hypothyroidism, can be VERY difficult. Once your thyroid numbers are normalized, seeing a nutritionist may prove to be very helpful-your doctor can arrange that. As for the anemia, there are different types and you need this diagnosed so you can be treated. You may need to see a hematologist to figure out what type of anemia you have.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, there is no cause for concern. You may take vitamin B12 and Folate to address the slightly large size of red cells. Basophil count is not of concern.    Wish you good health!

Low but...: If you are asking about RDW that is part of a CBC report in United States, a value lower than 80 is usually considered low (different labs may have different norms ). A low RDW may be suggestive of iron  deficiency, thalassemia (or other altered red cells), or other blood problems. However, a value of  10.9 is too low  unless a different measurement.
