Usually not, unless: it is specifically a cine or video esophagram.  A better test is endoscopy by ENT specialist.  Ask your doctor a referral.

Eso diverticulum: This is possible but not very common. The reason for this may be the fact that the endoscopy failed to diagnose the diverticulum or that it developed in the interim. Barium swallow is very sensitive test for diverticulum. Also, doing an endoscopy in this case can be dangerous since the endoscope may perforate the diverticulum.

would a modified barium swallow test show if there was damage to the upper esophageal sphincter? is it possible to damage your upper esophageal sphincter from swallowing too hard or improperly?

: The upper esophageal sphincter is actually a muscular valve. A barium swallow study,directed by a speech therapist looks for dysfunction. The radiologist performing the fluoroscopic exam can detect reflux and pathology. . I had a patient who ruptured his esophagus trying to prevent vomiting up colonoscopy prep which he stated tasted like sea water. I don't think improper swallowing would damage

would a regular xray show esophagus cancer from 1 year ago? would a routine blood test show cancer activity from 1 year ago? would a barium swallow from 4 years ago show early esophagus cancer? i read its slow growing but aggressive later im scared?

: It is not feasible to address these theoretical concerns. Do you have any symptoms? If you are concerned about esophageal cancer you could consult a GI doctor to ascertain if an endoscopy may be warranted.

Leak: Despite the tests, you must still be leaking internally. Not all x-rays see everything &amp; endoscopy will not see a small leak. Contact &amp; see your surgeon ASAP.

Limits of studies: All above studies done to detect leak have their limitations and sometime clinical suspicion is the best test!!! Hopefully the leak is small because it did not show on all these tests. Typically situation like this can be managed without need for further operation unless patient is very sick(septic) however surgeon on the case can give the best opinion after evaluating the whole picture.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated.  Wish you good health!
