Varies: Typically 3-6 months. There are sensory nerves that cross the incision lines needed in inguinal hernia repair. While with good technique these are often identified and preserved, there are times they are divided - both intentionally and unintentionally.  Known side effects of any incision include permanent changes in sensation - this can range from chronic pain, stinging, tingling, to numbness.

Most likely OK: Pain, swelling and numbness after hernia surgery is normal. The numbness will last for a long time, but you will get used to it in time. Pain and swelling usually goes away within 4-6 weeks. If the swelling increased, was associated with redness or any drainage, it might be due to infection, in which case you need to see your surgeon right away. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting 6 weeks

Unsure: This is a strange constellation of symptoms, and is probably not related to your inguinal hernia repair.  If these symptoms persist or get worse you should be evaluated.  If you have worsening numbness, weakness, confusion, or loss of bowel or bladder control you should see a doctor immediately

what is the best way to prepare for robotic inguinal hernia repair in the days leading up to surgery . are the drinks like ensure pre surgery of any value. is it best to eat lightly the day prior to surgery ? i am trying to prepare in the best ways.

Prop: Your suggestions are good. One tip I give patients is to insure that their bowel movements won't be difficult. Take stool softener, don't be dehydrated, eat fiber rich foods or take Metamucil a few days before surgery,  and consider having a rectal glycerin suppository on hand, just in case. Of course,don't eat.or drink(unless you need morning meds) after midnight the night before surgery.

active 70 yr old male , non smoker / no alcohol. about to undergo robotic inguinal hernia repair. have bph with a psa  .64 . taking flowmax. is there anything i can do to help insure that i will be able to urinate post surgery ? thanks in advance !!

Urination: I recommend taking your flomax with a small amount of water on the day of surgery. Make sure you empty your bladder just before anesthesia and surgery. Also try to avoid opioid pain relievers, sedatives, decongestants and antihistamines postop. Get up and move around as early as possible. Don't wait too long to urinate if you get the urge. Don't let your bladder get distended.

Not sure...: I understand your question. Male or female? Inguinal hernia surgery would not cause one to become pregnant, or reduce a person's chance of fertility or becoming pregnant either.

Injection/mesh remov: First, pain from inguinal hernia mesh usually improves significantly in the first 3 months after surgery and about 90% of patients with abnormal pain are free of pain at one year.  Steroid injections are often helpful.  If pain persists the ileoinguinal nerve, which is often the source of the pain, can be cut.  If the pain remains severe mesh removal can be considered.

See your doctor: This may be a normal amount of clear yellow serous body fluid coming from the surgical site. If there is increasing  pain, redness and skin warmth contact your surgeon right away. If you are concerned, please call you surgeon very soon so you can be informed as to what to watch for and what to expect for your own condition.
