Middle Ear Effusion: Can have several causes (ie viral infection, bacterial infection, blocked eustachian tube, lining of middle ear produces too much fluid)  and can be independent from otitis media (ome)  often happens after cold and the fluid can remain even several months after resolution of ear infection.  Important to have otolaryngologist perform otoscopic exam and diagnose cause.

Middle Ear Problem: The dizziness is most likely from irritation of the middle are from the fluid. If you have no contraindications a decongestant like pseudophedrine could help, a very short course of a nasal decongestant (after about three days the can cause rebound &amp; make things worse when stopped) or nasal steroids may help. It is a little unusual for adult to get ear effusions &amp; this should be checked too.

Barotrauma: Barotrauma from eustachian tube dysfunction from cold and changes in air pressure when flying. A few tips: chew gum, inhale, and then gently exhale while holding the nostrils closed and the mouth shut; suck on candy, yawn.
If no relief, try antihistamines and decongestants by mouth.
If still no relief, see ENT doc.

Yes, safe but...: Yes, coconut oil is safe to use but unlikely to help this much. It does have some antimicrobial properties but ear pressure is most likely related to allergies & inflammation around the eustachian tube. Antibiotics may not help much either. Avoiding dairy & wheat may help as well as treating allergies. Consider homeopathy & seeing a cranial osteopath.

See The Spin Doctor: Sounds like there's an imbalance in there. More fluid on one side than the other. Leads to an illusion of motion. It's called 'vertigo.' So the infection is most likely gone but all the fluid from the inflammation hasn't been resorbed yet and/or is doing so unevenly. You should get better in a short while. Try Dramamine (dimenhydrinate) (no Rx needed). If that does not help, see your doctor. Try not to drive yet.

Otitis media: Fluid behind the eardrum may persist for up to 12 weeks following inflammation.  Medications are not particularly good at clearing this up although decongestants may make you feel better.  If you have persistent symptoms it is best to see someone.  Ear tubes may be indicated for some.

It is not water: The fluid in the middle ear is not water.  It is usually blood serum secondary to negative pressure from Eustachian tube blockage.  At 43 years of age it is probably the result of a viral infection.  I would wait no more than 3 weeks.  If not spontaneously resolved by then, see an ENT doctor.

If your hearing is: affected,you need to see ENT Dr. It is possible you need to have the middle ear drained with a needle or tympanostomy tube to get the fluid out.

Ear Irritation: Greetings, has a doctor told you that you have fluid behind your eardrum? It may feel like water is behind but it could be pressure changes you are sensing. Outer ear infection toons are often called swimmers ear because they are linked to water exposure. The only way to know for sure if a hole exists is to see your ENT doctor. Use a hair dryer on low and aim into your ear to dry moisture daily.
