One option: Alexis, surgery is an option, however you must weigh the risks and potential complications of undergoing surgery before proceeding. A 2cm hiatal hernia can certainly cause problems with eating, you certainly need to rule out other GI issues before having an operation that is irreversible. Continue working with your GI doctor, or ask for a referral to an esophageal specialist first to be sure.

Before surgery: Diabetes and elevated blood sugars, (&gt;250) increase the risk of surgery and anesthesia. To mitigate, lower overall risk, it is best to increase the diabetic monitoring for 2 to 3 days before your surgery. Arrive for surgery with a Blood sugar below 250, a record of recent blood sugars. We cancel elective surgery if blood sugar is &gt;300. We cancel major surgery if glyco hemoglobin is &gt;9.0. Be well.

: You should be able to take solid food soon after you pass gas after surgery. It is always recommended to let your operating surgeon know of your condition after surgery and follow their advice. . Use a heating pad to the  abdomen and if you have passed gas you can try a mild laxative. Any other symptom then call the surgeon to let him/her know. Hope you feel better

Three options: At 60 you've probably had this thing pop out intermittently for years.  Formerly it was common to make an incision and repair the defect. Today there are other options. 1; A minimally invasive approach using a laparocsope to patch the opening from within. 2. Plugging the opening with a mesh through a small incision. If it was my hernia this is what I would choose.

Possibly: Your hernia was most likely repaired with mesh.  Every time you cough, you increase the pressure in your abdomen and the pressure on the repair.  If you had the repair done laparoscopically, the mesh is behind the hole so coughing should not cause problems.  If it was done open, the mesh is in front of the hole, so it may cause a recurrence.  See your doctor about that cough.
