Hard to say: Though a vitamin, the injectable form of b-12 usually requires a prescription.  Unless one has a significant case of pernicious anemia, some type of bowel problem or bowel surgery and a few other instances, b-12 by injection can be sujpplanted by oral or sublingual b-12.  You should know your b-12 level if you are concerned and be careful.  You can mask other problems.

B12 injections are needed in rare cases when your body can't absorb B12. There no other reason for a b12 injection

B12 is vital.: I highly recommend a book, "the world's healthiest foods" by george mateljan.
B12 can't be made by animals or plants, but by microorganisms like bacteria.  In addition to beef (grass-fed please), yogurt, low-fat milk, eggs, salmon, scallops, shrimp, venison, sardines are good sources of b12.  If you are a vegetarian, it is essential to take vit B12 supplement. By the way, a great question.

Yes: The size fof the red blood cell is related to the vit b levels.  If you are low, you need a work up to find out the cause which may include a problem with your small intestine not absorbing.  You may be a vegetarian or had surgery removing the part that absorbs vit b.  If you are low on B12 you should also check your folate (folic acid).  Remember that alcohol and stress can cause low vit b as well.
