what can cause the veins under the tongue to swell? my dentist noticed this today and was concerned, but did rule out cancer.

Swelling: Lots of possibilities including, but not limited to, allergic response, blocked salivary ducts, burn, trauma, change in meds, systemic problem such as Diabetes, etc.  Make appt to return to Dentist in 2 weeks.  If veins still appear swollen, referral to Oral Surgeon may be in order.

Common: This is common and most likely normal.  There is a large number of superficial veins just below the under surface of the tongue.  This is the reason that medications can be absorbed into the blood stream by placement medications "under the tongue".  The overlying skin of the base of the tongue is very thin.  Thus, veins may look prominent and dark in color.

Veins under tongue: These veins are normal and indicate you are human! Some people have very prominent visible veins, others don't. Unless they hurt, or bleed, or do something else weird, don't worry about them.

Submaxillary ducks: You may be describing the openings of the                 submaxillary duck.   These are major saliva glands  which help you in the digestion of your food. This area could become sore for several reasons one simple reason might be some mild inflammation ,which you can probably resolve was gargling with some salt water. If it continues to bother you I suggest you see your family doctor.

: Dark, sublingual veins are perfectly normal. They can be quite close to the surface.

Could be vein: The mucosa in that are is really thin and it just might be a vein that you are looking at. But since it gives you some concern, you might want to have your dentist take a look.

i'm 34 yr's old & have noticed a varicose vein under my tongue. feel well & look normal otherwise. no other symptom. should i be worried? thanks.

Not likely...: Most people have visible veins under the tongue.  This is normal and not worrisome for me.  If other symptoms (like pain, swelling, bleeding, lumps etc) show up, ask your favorite dental professional and sort it out then.

It : It could be a salivary duct which is blocked. If it were a vein you would be bleeding. Since you did not mention any blood, ii do not believe it would be a vein.

Obstructed Gland: The veins are normal. The ball could be an obstructed salivary gland. If it doesn't resolve itself, see your dentist.
