No: A pap test looks for cervical cancer. If you had a full hysterectomy, it means you don't have a cervix and therefore can't get cervical cancer and you don't need a pap test. You will however need a pelvic exam, becuase that checks our pelvis and ovaries, which you will still have after a hysterectomy.

Not if no cervix.: sometimes when they do a hysterectomy, they will remove all internal organs, but leave the cervix.  If you still have a cervix, then you will need a pap.  find out from your surgeon if you still have a cervix.

The purpose: Of pap smear is to detect early stage of cervical cancer. If you have cervix even though the uterus is out , you need pap smear . If the total hysterectomy means including the cervix , there is not need for pap smear anymore.

Yes: The pap smear is a test specifically designed to screen for abnormalities of the cervix.  If the cervix remains in place, you should continue with routine screening for cervical cancer or pre-cancer.

Yes: A partial hysterectomy is the removal of the upper part of the uterus, and a total (or complete) hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus and cervix. Because the cervix is still there, pap smears can still be done. Even if the cervix is not there anymore, a woman should have exams with her primary care doctor to watch for cancers of the vagina, vulva, anus, plus the many non-cancerous problems.

Inconsistent info: If the cervix is completely closed, as you say, then pap smear should not show endometrial cells. You may wish to see a gynecologist or a different gynecologist.

this time. so this is were we are at now. so whats the right answer.

No pap needed: If your entire uterus was removed — I.e. your cervix is gone — there is no point in a Pap smear. Paps in women are primarily to check the health of the cervix. If you’re having vaginal or other genital area symptoms, you probably should have a pelvic exam, but no Pap smear.

No PAP Needed: According to acog and other national societies after a hysterectomy with removal of the cervix (and no history of high grade pre-cancer); there is no value to continue paps.
