i had a uti treated me with macrobid. if i have urethritis caused after. does macrobid work on that problem. i was reading different antibiotics work on the urethra. also why doesnt a urine test detect urethra issues bacteria. do i need a swab test?

See your doc: Macrobid is fine for a simple, uncomplicated uti. However, if the infection is spreading to your kidneys, then you need a different antibiotic.

However, kidney pain (typically back pain) isn't sufficient to diagnose a kidney infection (pylonephritis) as you could simply be dehydrated. If you have back pain and a fever/chills, see your doc right away.

i was diag. with uti and given macrobid. 4 days later, still have fever and feel worse! i finished chemo for ovarian cancer in jan. what to do?

Call your doctor: It could be that your UTI is due to some bacteria resistant to macrobid. But your symptoms of fever and feeling worse may be due to something else. You should call the doctor who prescribed you Macrobid and let him/her know how you are feeling. Or go to the er if you are feeling extremely sick.

May not: Especially after the antibiotics.  I would see your primary doctor if it persists.  You may need an ultrasound.

2-4 days: 2-4 days is usual. If it lasts longer, especially if there is a fever, you should go back and see your doctor as it could mean an ascending infection into the kidneys.

Get urine culture: Return of symptoms might indicate that bacteria causing your UTI are resistant to Nitrofurantoin (active ingredient of macrobid) is not effective. Thus either  original bacteria were not sensitive to the antibiotic, became resistant to it or you acquired a new or breakthru infection whil;st on macrobid. Thus u need a urine culture followed different antibiotic. Culture will reveal sensitivities.

Important to follow: Up with your treating physician.  I wouldn't stop a medication unless you touch base with your doctor, or his/her coverage, and he/she tells you it's ok.  It's a bit concerning that your symptoms got better and now are worse, but you didn't specify what those symptoms were ...

i have frequent uti's. took macrobid (sensitive for it) for 7 days. uti back 2 days later - dr. wants me to take 2 (100mg) 3x a day for 5 days.?

Judgment call: Usual dose of Macrobid for UTI is 100mg 2x a day for 7 days.  When UTI comes back soon after, it may be an incompletely treated UTI or it may be a new uti.  2 days after, it is likely incompletely treated so number of days should be increased, but i wouldn't increase the dose above recommended.  If new uti, the new bug may be resistant.  If you have low kidney function, Macrobid isn't as effective.

on my second course of macrobid to eliminate uti and its not working. i feel better but still have symptoms. should i ask my dr to change the meds?

You can and should: If you are faithfully taking your medication and not getting any better then you should see your doc to be re-evaluated and possibly have your medication changed.

i was treated for a uti 9/2, finished meds 7 days later, it returned. i dont think its totally gone. i felt symptoms 8/18. let it go, i think letting it go created problems by making it harder to treat. i was given macrobid both times. do i go back?

: Yes, return to your doctor. If not yet done, you need a urine culture and sensitivity -- i.e. to identify the exact bacteria responsible and which antibiotic(s) will be most effective against it. Macrobid is often used, but isn't always effective; it's usually just a guess as to the best antibiotic. Keep working with your doctor on this. Good luck.
