i am a 57 y.o. female and had an anterior right total hip replacement 8 weeks ago and a debridement 3 weeks ago. my sites are opening up again and i have pain in my buttock when i walk. my lower spine is fused from previous surgeries. what can it be?

: If incisional sites are "opening up" after eight weeks post surgical hip replacement, it may indicate post-surgical collection of blood from the debridement.  See your surgical physician who performed the hip surgery for an exam to rule out infection, etc..

i will have 2 surgery. 1 liposuction remove male breast 2 hip replacement. i want lipo first then hip. any contradictions of done month or two apart?

Lipo first: I would assume that your orthopedic surgeon would prefer to have the lipo done first, so as not to infect the joint replacement. Ask both surgeons for advice.

two months after a total hip replacement, i am experiencing pain in the buttocks. what would you recommend i do? will this become permanent?

Total hip: Check with orthopedic surgeon. Check x-ray position for any loosening or impingement. It may be spine(not hip) related.

is it normal to have leg swelling after total hip replacement surgery?

Accepted Answer

Need evaluation: If the swelling is in the same leg as the surgery, and not in the other leg you need to be evaluated for a deep vein thrombosis (dvt). Okay to call your surgeon, and ask about an ultrasound of the leg, possible blood clot. Good luck.

Can be: While i wouldn't call it normal, leg lengthening is a potential result of total hip replacement and can be no big deal or a significant disability.  Leg lengthening has become less common with newer implants and surgical techniques.  Significant lengthening can be balanced with a heel lift in the other shoe.

2 years ago i fell from a ladder.got hip replacement surgery.i still can't run, have pain when carrying heavy things,and feel hip when walking.normal?

Hip replacement: This is not normal. What does your surgeon say?  The prosthesis may be loose or mslpisitioned. An X-ray would show the problem.

besides hip dislocation and hip fracture, what are other side effects of hip replacement surgery?

There are a number -: Of others, like infection, bleeding requiring transfusions, nerve injury, leg clots which may prove fatal if it moves to the lungs;
wound healing problems, ugly scar.  The stress of surgery can cause heart/chest or urinary problems, like heart attacks, failure, in patients with cardiac issues; or pneumonia, urinary infections. Rare problems like pressure sores if some one does not get out of bed.

Varies: Most total hip patients experience significant pain relief very soon after surgery. It is not uncommon though for a patient to need occasional pain medication for a few weeks after surgery. Individual pain thresholds vary from person to person.

is it normal to have groin pain after hip replacement? 3 months out,  a lot of groin pain. feels like it is at the iliac crest, a burning ache. bent leg/sitting worsens it. anterior approach. diflucan helped leg but not groin. pain prior to surgery

Not normal: Groin pain is a very common symptom of hip osteoarthritis and I wonder if you experienced it before hip replacement. I tend to think that your current discomfort is somehow related to the hip joint or surrounding structures. I don't see how diflucan, an antifungal medication, helped pain. See your orthopedic surgeon for evaluation and advice.

46 y/o s/p hip replacement. had dvt, pe at 4 weeks post op. now at 11 weeks, still with groin , buttock pain, stiff, still uses cane. still normal ?

Unusual: See your orthopod. Groin pain is usually from the hip but could have other causes.  You could have had the DVT as a result of surgery, but I would also check your homocysteine level.
