is preparation h or tucks (witch hazel) more effective? which one is easier to use?

Accepted Answer

Neither: Nothing in preparation h that works for anything other than as a lubricant and I do not use tucks wipes or any adult wipe with lanolin, alcohol or witch hazel. You do not say what your problem is so i can not offer alternative suggestions with the information you have submitted.

Use with hydrocortis: Use hemorrhoidal ointment with  Hydrocortisone to minimize itching. Also controlling constipation will be beneficial.

Accepted Answer

May need surgery: See your doctor to evaluate it. Sometime external henmorrhoids (if thrombosed or clotted) need surgery to relieve the pressure and the pain.

doc, im in the army and have developed a severe hemorrhoid that is painful when running, it is external and bulging. how severe of an issue is this? what steps should i follow for treatment? prep h and tucks pads havent helped?

Accepted Answer

: Unfortunately, a surgical treatment for a thrombosed or "bulging" hemorrhoid is at least as symptomatic (painful!) as having the hemorroid itself. Topical relief for ease of uninterrupted sleep is possible with lidocaine ointment, but prep H and tucks will usually not help much.

passed hard stool a few weeks ago. upped my water and fiber. have regular bowel movements but bum is still sore. no chance to heal. use tucks. whats best home remedy? took prep h suppository and it made me too jittery.

Bum pain: Sitz bathes can be helpful. Sit in a bathtub with warm water.  There needs to be enough water to submerge the anal area. Soak for about 15 minutes – several times a day.

Neither: I don't recommend witch hazel as many people will develop a contact dermatitis to witch hazel. Prep h has nothing that has ever been shown tro treat hemorrhoids other than as a lubricant. If a patient tells me prep h helps, i know they do not have significant hemorrhoidal problems.

Anal fissure: Anal fissures are often caused by chronic constipation and straining on defecation. Focus on keeping stools soft with a healthy, fiber-rich diet. Preparation h is primarily for hemorrhoidal relief, but could help fissure discomfort since there is a lubricating component to preparation h. Alternatively, you can also apply petroleum jelly if painful. See your md if severe.

Not likely: Most fissure will respond to stool softeners, sitz baths, and a prescription cream to allow the anal muscles to relax (nifedipine). Preparation h does not usually help.

treats not cures: There are several formulations of preparation h - some products have phenylephrine, a drug that constricts blood vessels, as active ingredient, in a 0.25% concentration, others have hydrocortisone, in a 1% concentration, which reduces inflammation and swelling.  None cure hemorrhoids, but does decrease the acute discomfort and swelling.
