what are some reasons for trochanter pain?

Several reasons: Trochanteric pain is typically due to bursitis but can also be due to strain or tear of the gluteal tendons.  I have also seen trochanteric pain referred from an intra-articlular joint problem and lumbar spine. A thorough history and physical will usually point you in the right direction. A simple x-ray, nsaid's and physical therapy usually help. Mri if no improvement.

Bursitis possibly: 'trochanteric' pain sounds like pain coming from the outside prominence of your hip...Greater trochanteric bursitis is common and can be managed w/nsaids/voltaren cream and a steroid injection.If you are having pain when you move your hip around(groin or thigh pain) or having pain tying your shoes etc.Than an arthritic problem in your hip needs to be ruled out.See your ors if pain continues.Gl!

Not nerve impinge: Can b a couple of causes. Trochanteric bursitis is 1.  The other could b of multiple origins. Fai is 1 or other hip maladies. The radiation 2 the knee can b referred from the hip, but not 2 the ankle. C an orthopedist for xame ; x-rays 2 try and get a handle on the problem.

Stretching: Pain over the greater trochanter (part of the hip on the side of the body) is usually due to greater trochanteric bursitis or inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac over the bony prominence) not from a pinched nerve. Often it is difficult to distinguish between a pinched nerve and bursitis. Physical exam and/or injections can help. If it is bursitis, stretching and anti-inflammatories help.

Muscle imbalance?: See your doc; assuming truly trochanteric bursitis, likely benefit from physical therapy. Specific rx needs to handled by you and your md.  Acetaminophen may help re: pain, doesn't affect inflammation though.

what, if any, are the negative effects to having repeated steroid injections for bursitis of the greater trochanters?

More joint damage: Steroids are good for short  time , when injected frequently in  the same joint tend to destroyed more the joint.  not to mention  absorption into the blood stream and altering  the endocrine axis of your body making your body don't producing  different types of hormones needed for several body functions.

Asymmetric hip bone: Generally, nothing. Your body does not grow or develop with perfect symmetry. One arm may be longer than the other, one leg different from the other, etc. Most likely the difference in your trochanters is just normal variation.

Complication from ?: Was there an injury or a procedure done? Can't have a complication if nothing was done.

Tendonitis: It appears that you have tendon pathology rather than significant hip arthritis. An orthopedic specialist could evaluate you, review the films and advise you best about diagnosis and treatment. Other imaging studies may or may not be recommended for diagnostic purposes.
