Great Question: I think that's one of the flaws of healthtap, but you can easily find out if a particular physician is board certified by going to www.Abms.Org, the website of the american board of medical specialties. They have a search engine that will allow you to look up a specific physician and view his certification.

Extra training: The levels of education for a physician are this: 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, minimum 3 years of residency, then a fellowship to specialize. These can as little as one extra year but are often several years after residency to become even more specialized in their care.

Just ask!: Just call the office and ask them.  Almost all md's and do's are board certified right out of, or shortly after residency.  For specialists, that's a complicated answer.  Your state department of professional regulation may know, but their records may be out of date.
