It is...: not available in topical form. Also, I would stay away from putting the powder in my face because it may irritate the skin and cause blemishes amongst other side effects.

after a total of 10 months of doxycycline and topicals i still have some acne. will it eventually go away by itself or should i go for accutane?

Accepted Answer

Acne: Cystic acne responds best to Accutane.  Some individuals may require long-term use of doxycycline or topical creams for acne. You may be less likely to get breakouts issue get older. Be patient.

If : If he has scarring acne, he might be a candidate for accutane.  It is a controversial medication but very helpful for acne.  I don't personally know anyone in the philly area, but would recommend you look for a dermatology group that is focused on medical dermatology (as opposed to cosmetic) as they will likely be experienced in treating many types of patients for acne. Meds: Many patients do well with over the counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid preparations. Some patients require topical or oral antibiotics or retinoids as well. If the over the counter meds alone don't control your acne after a month of daily use, see a doctor for additional treatment options. It is important to be persistent, and some patients 'get worse before they get better'.

im taking doxycycline 100mgx2 a day, and topical clindamycin for acne. its been about a  1 1/2 week since im on it, and little more constipated and stool is more blackish. cause of  concern?can antibiotics cause this? on and off. pepto b sometimes?

: Doxycycline is a very broad spectrum antibiotic. This can change the bacterial flora in your colon and also change the color of the stool along with the function of the colon. It is a good idea to take a probiotic daily to help rebalance the bacterial flora in your bowel.

It's usually okay: You may get some diarrhea from it, and if you're a female, you may get a candida infection. If this happens, stop it. It can make you sensitive to sunlight. Don't ever use an antibiotic as sole therapy for acne, but in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide. Milk, antacids, and iron deactivate tetracyclines if you take them together.

It can: Not only does the Doxycycline suppress the bacteria that cause acne, it exhibits an modest antiinflammatory effect.  Coming off of it may lead to an acne flare, but that is not guaranteed.
