It's more how you use it than some special "magic" or "gimmick" or special ability. That's just my personal view on this subject. All you need is a simple manual toothbrush. I like the oral-b myself. Others recommend the sonicare. The "ionic" ? The supersonic? Hmm.

Usually: They tend to get softer with use.  However a soft brush is stiff enough to remove plaque and stiffer brushes have no other benefit and may damage the gums or teeth.

No: If the bristles were that color when you got the brush and it is an ada accepted brush, it's safe.   If they were once white and are now pink, you could have periodontal disease since its probably blood.

Not necessarily: Both manual and power brushes can be very effective in removing plaque if used correctly.  Many people find power brushes to be easier to use, as the brush only needs to be held and guided.  Using either brush, however, does not exempt you from having to floss!
