Usually: They tend to get softer with use. However a soft brush is stiff enough to remove plaque and stiffer brushes have no other benefit and may damage the gums or teeth.

They get bent: It is always better to use a soft toothbrush with a gentle motion. Heavy force is not needed to remove plaque. A hard toothbrush has too much force. Over time the bristles will get bent and do not contact the tooth surface in a way that effectively removes the plaque.

Agree and ...: Worn toothbrushes tend to fray & tangle at the bristle ends, thus are less effective. If it looks worn, it's time for a new soft never hard bristle toothbrush.
