Recession: if you look in the mirror has the gum recessed down the tooth. (Showing the root, a yellow color of the tooth). This is usually recession and can be caused be grinding, brushing the gums too hard and therefore causing sensitivity to hot and cold. If that's not the cause, have you traumatized the tooth ie. Hit it on a bottle or something hard.? May times these do not show up in X-rays.

See below: It could be a cracked tooth, it could be a little recession that exposes the root surface which can be very sense.  You may have a tooth that has pulpitis and this is not visible on radiograph.  If it gets worse you likely will need root canal.  If it is along the gum line then it is likely the recession issue and may get better.  If concerned call your provider or get a second opinion.  Good luck.
