X-ray and examinatio: There are three probable causes - a sinus infection, a gum infection (periodontal), or a nerve infection (endodontic).  Each would require different treatments and medications, and the diagnosis would be made by an x-ray and clinical examination (i.e. Seeing what it looks like).

Both: Most common scenario is tooth infection causing sinus infection when the infected tooth penetrates in the nearby sinus cavity. The other way around is less likely unless the pus from the sinus cavity eats up the wall adjacent to the tooth and gushes in the tooth canal, which is extremely unlikely outcome.

: A perapical dental abscess may have an associated boil like swelling of the gum. Also, if you gently tap the tooth with a spoon it'll cause tooth discomfort. Cough,phlegm,nasal congestion are not characteristic of a dental abscess.

Get help: Nothing short of treating the tooth with root canal treatment/crown or extraction/implant/crown will resolve your problem. Antibiotics to control spread of infection and analgesics to modify pain will temporarily be moderately effective until you can have active dental treatment.  Call dentist now...This isn't a diy project.

Neurologic findings include trouble walking, speaking, eating and swallowing, severe memory issues, confusion, seizures and many other symptoms. Sinus infections are very common and brain abscesses extremely rare.

See your Dentist immediately.  If your teeth are healthy your Dentist will refer you on to your Physician for sinus evaluation.

A real sinus infection would require one type of antibiotic; a tooth-related infection could require one of several different antibiotics depending on what is causing the infection.
