X-ray and examinatio: There are three probable causes - a sinus infection, a gum infection (periodontal), or a nerve infection (endodontic). Each would require different treatments and medications, and the diagnosis would be made by an x-ray and clinical examination (i.e. Seeing what it looks like).

Examine You: In order to determine the origin and source of your problem, you will need to have a clinical exam and appropriate x-rays where your teeth and sinuses can be seen. Your dentist can take a panoramic x-ray and see the teeth and your maxillary sinuses and may choose to perform some additional diagnostic tests in order to diagnose the source of your problem.

Not always easy: As doctors of oral health, dentists are trained to diagnose, treat and prevent any oral disease/infection. The dentist must review the patient’s history, conduct thorough examination and review x-rays to support the diagnosis.
