recently recovered from a bad bout of rsv (50 yo f) but have residual tongue pain that only hurts when i swallow or move it. could this be related, or could it be something unrelated to my recent illness? no ulcers or spots on tongue?

: You are right that a number of infections could affect the tongue and cause inflammation. It may be important to make sure of adequacy of your nutrition especially micronutrients could also cause pain like vitamin deficiencies. There is increased demand and depletion of vitamins during illnesses. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy food may be helpful in limiting the pain and speed recovery.

Without : Without examining you it is difficult to come to a conclusion.  You history of fever and throat pain points to an infection, possibly viral.  These typically take a week to 10 days to run their course. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated first by your personal physician then, if no cause is found, by your dentist.

Sore throat: This sounds like a sore throat.The throat is connected to the ears by the eustation tube.If the sore throat is caused by the strep bacteria ( strep throat ) this must be treated by a 10 day course of antibiotics or one is at risk for heart disease and other potentially serious complications.A simple throat swab can tell if you need antibiotics.See your doctor

See a doc: You probably have an infection in your throat and if it is extensive enough to make your tongue hurt, it might need antibiotics or more.  Meanwhile, gargle with warm salt water.

Canker sore: If new, likely canker sore. Treat with OTC meds and saline gargles. If persist beyond a week see oral surgeon or ENT for exam.

Sore throat ,Tmd: I would highly recommend seeking the help of ENT or a dentists , several causes to your issue , abscess tooth, infection around wisdom teeth, tonsils, strep throat and muscle spasms from due to TMJ or tmd  , so you see multiple reasons to seek help with your dentists.

Two problems: 1. Canker sores are the most common oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 7-10 days or less. The condition is idiopathic recurrent aphthous ulcers is usually self-limiting. 
2.  Swollen gums can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, gum disease. See a dentist for evaluation and treatment. Rec.:  see a dentist for evaluation, imaging  and treatment.
