Find a stable posit.: Try to find the best functional position for the joint so the forces do not adversely load the structures.  This should also coincide with the position where there is the least amount of muscle function.  In short the jaw position, muscles, head and neck should all be able to function normally and then the teeth should fit this position.  That would be a stable joint functional position.

Diagnose then treat: The best functional position (painless, noiseless, full range of motion without deviation or deflection) is the first initial step.  When you are functioning optimally in the diagnostic position you can consider treatments.  A splint is usually necessary to help find the reversible diagnostic position and then can be used to help maintain stability during early treatment.

TMD: TMJ is the name of the joint.  TMD is dysfunction of the joint and/or surrounding musculature.  First, make appointment with your Dentist.  Tis is more his/her province than the Physician's.  Second take OTC antiinflammatories (Advil or Aspirin) exactly as per pkg directions.  Rest your jaw...no gum, eat only soft foods.  Apply warm compresses.

1-3 weeks: Every patient heals differently and also it depends on how severe your TMJ is.    It can take months before you fully recover.

: Prednisone can reduce inflammation of the TMJ and of an ear canal afflicted with eczema. Apart from that I see no effect of reducing inflammation of other ear structures unless you're treating acute ear drum inflammation/infection causing actual earache

It is important to treat the cause  of the pain.
