It depends..: It depends how much you use this delicate joint - repetitive motion injury is most common cause - lie texting, computer work etc.  Initial treatment is ice, rest, splint, possible antiinflammatory drughs like ibuprofphen or simillar.

Thumb pain: There exist various types of simple but effective  thumb and wrist braces which can help . Should also try glucosamine and some topical creams. Cortisone injections can help if  one is careful to try only a few of them ( one a year)

steroid shot for thumb arthritis. now excruciating pain radiating to shoulder. is this normal? i know it can take days for the injection to work, but is it normal to make it worse? if so, when will it quit hurting so badly? ice & asprin not helping

Abnormal : This is not an expected reaction to a steroid injection of the thumb. Unclear if your new pain is actually related to the injection. I would strongly recommend you revisit your provider for further evaluation.

Possibly: Tendons pass along the path from the forearm,to the wrist and could be affected by severe arthritis at the thumb base, causing a tendinitis, probable cause of the forearm and wrist pain. Wrist splint, ice affected area, rest affected part, consider applying Voltaren gel now OTC to painful area. Good luck

Can be: Yes but it could also be the symptom of an irritated nerve. Pain with use, not at rest, points more toward a joint or tendon pain.
