my throat hurts in the morning and at night. i take a cough drop and the pain goes away. i'm always good for the rest of the day. why ?

AM throat pain: Could be reflux. Consider raising head of bed ( pillow under mattress), try ranitidine and or prevecid, avoid lots of coffee, soda, alcohol ,spicy food and smoking. Alternatively could be allergies with post nasal drip, elevating head of bed helps and try zyrtec/ before bedtime

Post nasal drip: You may have a post nasal, drip which becomes bothersome when you lie down at night  and is worse on arising. Use salt water nose drops for help.

today morning woke up with sore throat and took emergen c 1000mg vit c 2/3 of a pack. at night forgot i have taken it in the morning and took my daily multivitamins half a daily dose. would that hurt? im in so much stress because of it right now?

: Will it hurt? No. But there's a paucity of well referred literature. For example, Linus Pauling original articles have been seriously challenged. Unlike prescription meds, there's littler no regulation of OTC's.  Will it help?  Probably not.

Take Honey: Get Netflix. 
watch a funny movie, rest, relax.
Take honey - about one tsp 3x a day for the cough.
Drink green tea with lemon and honey - at least six glasses / day.
Green mucus suggest thick stale drainage, possible bacteria. Humming helps move the mucus. If persists, ask doctor about using Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus irrigator to remove stale phlegm and restore good cilia movement

Possibly post nasal.: drip. You may suffer from mild congestion that leads to post nasal drip that doesn't drain while you sleep due to gravity and lying supine. As you get up and stand, the gravity helps with drainage. Try sleeping on an extra pillow at night and using saline nasal spray at night. If problem persists, see PCP.

Dry mouth: Dear FBurton,

Is your mouth open when you sleep?  Do you snore?  A dry mouth may be causing your symptoms.  Heartburn may also cause a sore throat.  Pls avoid lying down soon after eating.

Please see doctor: If you have had symptoms for a month- you probably have an infection that needs treatment. You should see your health care professional.  To relieve symptoms, while an antibiotic takes effect, you could use Ibuprofen or Naproxen for the inflammation and pain (with food to avoid stomach upset). Warm salt water gargle will help sooth the sore throat along with vit c lozenge. But see the doctor!

i've had a sore throat for a year that occurs most of the day, especially at night and morning. it's not unbearable which is why i mostly just put up with it, and take cough drops. i'm uninsured and can't afford a doctor, what can i do?

: Florida is quite humid so I do not think low humidity is the culprit. If you are overweight, sleep apnea can be the cause. The other etiologies could be sinusitis with post nasal drainage or reflux. However, I still think you need to see  a doctor for checking your throat first for ruling out the obvious cause (make a deal with front office for paying cash, just request a quick throat exam).

how can i have breath that doesn't smell so bad? i brush my teeth in the morning & at night & floss & use mouthwash as well. what can i use that will help it not smell? i have morning breath & sore throat

Halitosis: Consult your doctor to manage sore throat and advice if there is connection with infection and bad breath.

GERD: You may have gastroesophageal reflux disease. As you sleep, the acid can breach the phincter between your stomach and throat and the reflux irritates the lining of your throat.  Talk to your doc about possible proton pump inhibitor. Aldo consider putting spacers under head of bed. Other causes could be viral illness,  post nasal drainage and sinuses, or dry throat from sleep apnea. Hope it helps!
