my 5 month old daughter has had some loose stools. no fever, eating normally, and active. she has a red bottom, relieved with diaper cream. could it be teething?

Probably not: An association between teething and diarrhea has never been scientifically proven—many unrelated illnesses are blamed on teething, if your child is particularly miserable with excessive crying or fever greater than 100.4, they may not be teething and you should contact your pediatrician. Loose stools are the norm in a 5 month old infant with breast/formula or if you started certain solid foods.

my 15mths old toddler is having loose stools (not exactly diarrhoea) for almost 3 weeks now. he is not teething and not being sick.diet hasnt changed?

If he is.....: ....Otherwise well, then he is well.  Toddlers get diarrhea sometimes.  If he is otherwise sick, it should be investigated.

Teething : Teething and the symptoms attributed to it are a common concern for parents.  Lots of studies have looked at this and shown the most common symptoms of teething to be:
-increased biting
-drooling
-gum-rubbing
-sucking 
-irritability
-wakefulness
-ear rubbing
-facial rash
-decreased appetite for solid foods
-slightly elevated temperature (under 100.4f)

of course none of these symptoms accurately and consistently predict tooth eruption - that would be too easy, right?
  
If his temperature is over 100.4f and he has diarrhea, he is more likely sick than teething.  Call your child's doctor with any questions or concerns.

Not teething: A temperature that high is not due to teething. It it's more likely due to a viral illness. Your child sounds fairly sick. With those symptoms for four days, you need to take him to see a doctor asap.

: One of the best remedies for his sore bottom is cleaning with baby oil on a cotton ball. That generally doesn’t sting and helps to sooth the area. Then apply a barrier diaper ointment, such as desitin or Balmex (white unscented diaper cream) so that the stool isn’t touching his skin as much.

Immediate exam: It is dangerous for your baby to have diarrhea for a week. She may be dehydrated even though she appears hydrated and she may be malnourished by now. The diarrhea could be due to an infection or a feeding problem. Whatever the cause may be your child's life could be at risk and she needs to be examined at a clinic immediately. Take her to a clinic immediately for proper evaluation and treatment!

Maybe: Scientific research says it does not, but I have seen babies who repeatedly have loose bowel movements when teething. Can not prove the realrionship however, so it remains confusing.

Teething: You would be fussy if you had something sharp pushing on your gums. Diarrhea probably due to increased mucous production. Recommend cold teething ring. Recommend your child see a Pedodontist, a Pediatric Dental Specialist, and expert in dento-facial growth and development. No, your child is not to young to assure normal eruption and to get him/her help to feel better.

Doubt teeth: This is more likely one of the many intestinal viruses the kid will have over time. They usually have 2-3/yr until age 5 and may or may not have fever with it. The main therapy Is making sure they remain hydrated. Pedialyte, apple sauce, Tylenol for comfort usually do the trick. Cough meds are worthless at this age.
